Definition of Computer Network, Internet, CAN, LAN, MAN, WAN, PAN – Many people nowadays depend on the internet, both for communicating, seeking information and so on. Well, the use of the internet requires a personal network of computers.

So, what is a computer network?

The definition of a personal computer network is the formation of computers & other devices that are connected to one unit to spread news & data, quoting the information on the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Learning Resources page.

The information and data can take place via cable or without cables as a result of allowing computer network users to exchange documents and other data.

It can also be said that a computer network is a number of communication terminals consisting of two or more personal computers that are connected to each other using the other.

All networks are built and collected so that information and data submitted by the sender can be received quickly and accurately by the recipient.

The use of computer networks always uses a combination of hardware and software. On the other hand, personal computer networks can also be private or public.

There are compound types of computer networks. Various computer networks are made for various types of purposes, the essence of which is to help solve poly tasks effectively through a system of exchange of facts.

Here are a number of types of personal computer networks along with definitions & uses, as quoted from the Basic Network 1 module published by the Ministry of Education and Culture & a number of other sources.

PAN is a communication network of one device with another at close pause, and usually only a few meters. The PAN network can be an access point to a variety of exclusive devices, such as computers, telephones, mobile phones, televisions, data-based home security systems, to public communication vehicles such as the internet.

PAN is generally connected via a bus found on a personal computer device, such as USB and firewire. While the control in PAN can use Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) & Bluetooth technology.

There are at least two functions of PAN, namely connecting computer devices, and as a medium of communication between one’s own devices (personal communication). An example of using a PAN network is connecting a mobile phone using a laptop using Bluetooth.

LAN is a computer network whose coverage only covers narrow areas, such as campuses, buildings, offices, in homes, schools, & the like.

There are 3 characteristics of LAN. All three are having higher data rates, covering narrow geographic areas, & requiring telecommunications lines that are rented based on telecommunications operators.

The majority of LAN networks are now based on IEEE 802.three Ethernet technology using switch devices, which have data transfer rates of 10, 100, or 1000 Mbit/s.

In addition, many LAN networks now use 802.11b technology (commonly claimed Wi-fi). Places that provide Wi-fi-based LAN networks are generally called hotspots. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is also often used to connect LANs.

3. Wide Area Network (WAN) WAN is a personal computer network with coverage coverage in a wide area, for example intercity, interstate, and even intercontinental. Therefore, WAN networks require routers and public communication channels.

The internet includes an example of a WAN network if it reaches the intercontinental area > is already a world information network.

A WAN network consists of a set of machines that run event-program applications. The machines function as hosts that are connected using subnets.

The task of the subnet is to bring messages based on one host to another host, as in the telephone network system that sends voice.

WAN is often considered with a set of geographically circulating LANs. Network devices known to use routers function to connect the LAN to the WAN. On IP networks, routers are used to store LAN and WAN addresses.

4. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

MAN is a network in one city that operates using high-speed data transfer, and is able to connect many different locations. MAN uses special devices and cables to connect multiple LANs.

There are 5 characteristics of MAN, which are as follows:

  • MAN covers an area of five-50 square km, or the equivalent of an urban area.
  • MAN is generally not owned by a single organization, but a consortium of users or network service providers.
  • MAN is often a high-speed network to enable sharing of regional resources.
  • MAN is larger in size even though it generally uses the same technology as LAN.
  • MAN only has one or two cable grains & does not have switching elements, which functions to organize packages through several cable results.

Initially, the MAN network was connected by a LAN cable to connect a number of offices only a few kilometers away. However, the completion of WIMAX, poly internet service users are interested in MAN-scale wireless.

CAN is like with the MAN computer personal network, but it is limited to one area. This network is commonly used in educational activities, such as lab practices, class updates, exams, emails, and notifications. However, the network that is evaluated is more conducive and faster, which can also be used for other means.

So, Campus Area Network is a mixture of a number of local personal computer networks (LANs) that are interconnected in the area of educational institutions. Meanwhile, CAN which refers to the Corporate Area Network and Controller Area Network has a greater coverage than LAN because it covers several buildings in exclusive areas. Even so, the range of CAN is narrower than WAN and MAN.

The CAN function is to connect computers in an area so that they can communicate with each other and exchange data. The majority of CAN consists of several LANs connected by switches and routers that create a single network. That way, each network user can communicate with each other privately, with or without cables.

In terms of language, the internet means an intermediate or connecting network. Meanwhile, based on aspects of operational definitions, the internet is a personal network of computers on a global scale that is connected using the TCP / IP protocol. Computers connected to the internet can number in the millions, even billions.

Therefore, with the internet, all people on this earth are able to communicate with each other while obtaining facts from billions of websites.

The internet has also become a kind of super large library that can provide various kinds of information for various needs, both in the form of writing, images, videos & multimedia products.

The ability of the internet to communicate the inhabitants of the earth, without being limited to the geographical area, makes him able to facilitate a variety of social, business, and other poly activities. As a result, when this developed means of buying and selling online, general media, education long distances, & still poly again.

Long before it became widely used globally, the internet was originally developed by the United States Department of Defense in 1969. At the time, he was called the ARPANET (US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) event.

The Alaihi Salam military shared the original ARPANET with the aim of creating a giant-scale computer network as a result of which the centralization of news in one place could be avoided. That way, the risk of communication chaos when one news center is wiped out because of the war can be prevented.

Entering the 1980s, ARPANET split into two networks, ARPANET & Milnet, but the two were still able to connect with each other. This interconnection network is called DARPA Internet, & hereinafter claimed to be internet.

After that, the internet was then developed for academic purposes in Alaihi Salam, & then soon expanded to other fields until it was able to be accessed on the basis of a personal personal computer.
